Shoreline – Weed and Algae

Regular observations of aquatic plant populations at various locations will be a part of our ongoing efforts to detect invasive species early. We need to be watchful for any early signs of EWM (Eurasian Water Milfoil) and any other Aquatic Invasive. If you have an interest contact and MLA board member. Contact any board member if you believe you have discovered any early signs of invasive species.

A natural shoreline is beneficial to the over health of the lake. Native plants, shrubbery, and trees act as great filters for runoff.

Native emergent near shore plants and woody downfalls are beneficial to our fishery by harboring food and cover.

Muskelunge lake is shallow and naturally high in the primary nutrient , Phosphorous. Some of this nutrient becomes trapped in the bottom sediment each year. When you prop wash stirs up the bottom sediment it releases this nutrient back into the water column. This in turn increases the plants and algae.

Vilas County Land and Water department can be a good resource for shoreline preservation efforts.
